New Technologies, Old Mindsets

Summery

This project aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of journalism and media students to analyze media content from a gender equality perspective and ensure fair gender portrayal. Through discussions, practical initiatives, and education on the legal framework, students are empowered to challenge and address sexism in the media.

Financed by:

Albanian Media Institute

Objective

Improve the knowledge and skills of journalism and media students to evaluate media products from a gender equality and fair gender portrayal perspective.

Key Point:

Open Discussions

Over 100 journalism and media students participated in AWA Forums, many for the first time discussing the themes of sexism and gender discrimination in media.

Impact

These discussions highlighted students' stereotypical perceptions about women in media. Post-forum, students reported a shift in how they would approach media products and a commitment to be more proactive in reporting sexist media content.

Student Initiatives

Students from the University of Prishtina created an awareness video against sexism in song lyrics, which was widely shared on AWA's Facebook page, serving as a model for other students.

Legal Framework Education:

Students gained insights into the legal framework and existing gaps in legislation regarding sexism in media, committing to support any initiatives aimed at addressing these gaps.
